All-Star Line-up at the 2011 Miami Beach Gay Pride
In addition to this year’s Grand Marshal, Bravo TV’sAndy Cohen, the parade will feature numerous celebrities and VIPs riding in more than 60 floats or marching alongside in solidarity. Continuing her long-standing support of the LGBT community, DJ Tracy Young will be a special guest in the parade fresh off her recent guest appearance on “The Real Housewives of Miami.” Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower and several of the city’s commissioners and staff will ride atop a specially designed float and many of the entries in the parade will echo this year’s “Super Hero” theme of empowerment.
Another highlight of Pride will be a salute to “Legacy Couples” – committed LGBT partners who have been together for 20 or more years who will march and ride together in recognition of their commitment and in affirmation of marriage equality.
Following the parade, the Pride Festival will feature refreshments, booths and two entertainment stages. Performers will include Dominican singer/songwriter Sohanny, performing her urban merengue dance hit “No Es Normal,” and multi-talented hit-maker JayQuan whose R&B/Pop/Latin vocals are a standout in the group Nas-T-Boyz. Also performing at the Festival will be Erika Jayne , Ceevox, Miss Richfield 1981, Marlon Alarm and the Miami Gay Men’s Chorus.
The pulse-racing line-up of DJs for the Festival includes Jody McDonald, DJ MIIK, DJ Seijo, Bill Kelly, and DJ/Producer Maximus 3000. Festival-goers can also expect some fabulous surprises and guest performances throughout the afternoon.
A Fabulous Week AbOUT
Because of the overwhelming success of the last two Pride events, Miami Beach Gay Pride has expanded this year to a week of extraordinary days OUT. Sanctioned events leading up to the Pride Parade and Festival include an Open House reception at the LGBT Visitor Center followed by a screening of the film “Were the World Mine” at the Miami Beach Cinematheque, both on Wednesday, April 13.
On Thursday, April 14, Unity Coalition|Coalicion Unida will present the “Leaders, Legends & Lovelies Ball,” honoring individuals who’ve made a difference in the community and unveiling a special collection of dolls specially created in the likenesses of South Beach’s most famous gender illusionists, Hosted by Elaine Lancaster & Music By DJ Maximus 3000 and Blue Money Jazz Sixtet.
In her new show, “30 Years On The Throne!,” Miss Richfield 1981 looks back at her storybook life celebrating three decades of beauty sovereignty as reigning queen of Richfield, Minnesota, “where butter is a spice and gravy is a beverage.” This Midwestern maven is winning over theater and cabaret audiences around the country with an interactive format that combines homespun warmth and edgy improv in a truly original performance. Miss Richfield will grace the stage of the Colony Theater on Friday, April 15.
Also on Friday, a VIP fundraiser celebrating the kickoff of Pride — “Miami Beach Gay Pride Super Hero Soiree” — takes place at the W South Beach beginning at 9 p.m. Super surprises and special guest heroes will include fashion designer Christopher Bates, special guest DJ Scotty Thompson and special appearances by Grand Marshal Andy Cohen, DJ Tracy Young, and cast members from the reality show “Real Housewives of Miami.” Tickets are $125 by clicking on the “Buy Your Tickets” button and entering “VIP Superhero Soiree” in the “Purpose” box. All proceeds will benefit Miami Beach Gay Pride.
On Saturday, Palace Restaurant/Bar at 1200 Ocean Drive presents “Brunchic,” where patrons may enjoy a prix-fixe brunch menu and a bottle of champagne, with ideal viewing of the parade. Prices are $65 and $85, plus tax & tip, with seatings beginning at 10:30 am. Call 305-531-7234 for reservations. Among other Palace Pride events is the Latin Stage from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., featuring Grammy Award winner Elvis Crespo, and video/Mashup Latin Music DJ Set by DJ/Producer Maximus 3000.
